Laminate Sheet Sizes, Grades, and Thickness

Grades (NEMA LD3, nominal thickness):

• Postforming grade (HGP), 0.039" / 1.0 mm — For countertops with a rounded front edge or integrated backsplash.
• Vertical grade (VGS/VGP), 0.028" / 0.7 mm — For cabinet doors, drawer fronts, wall panels, and other vertical surfaces. Lighter and less expensive than postforming grade.

How to Cut and Install Laminate Sheets

• Acclimate — Let the sheet and the substrate sit in the same room for 48 hours before bonding.
• Cutting — Mark the sheet 1/2" larger than the substrate and run masking tape along the cut line to limit chipping. Use a carbide-tipped saw blade, or a scoring knife for straight cuts. Whichever saw you use, the teeth should enter the decorative face first. That means face up on a table saw or hand saw, and face down with a circular saw or a jigsaw with a standard blade.
• Substrate — Bond to 5/8" or 3/4" MDF, particleboard, or plywood with one A face. The substrate must be flat, dry, and dust-free. Do not laminate over paint, varnish, or an old covering.
• Adhesive — Contact cement is the usual field adhesive for HPL. Coat both surfaces, giving the substrate two thin coats rather than one heavy one, and let both dry until they feel tacky but do not stick to your finger. Lay dowels across the substrate about 12" apart to position the sheet, then remove them one at a time and press from the center outward with a J-roller or pinch roller.
• Edges — On countertops, apply the edge strips first, route them flush, then laminate the top. Trim the overhang with a bearing-guided flush-trim router bit, and file toward the substrate, never out toward the decorative face. Finish exposed edges on cabinet doors and panels with matching edge banding.
• Care — Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid abrasive pads and acidic cleaners, and set hot pans on a trivet rather than on the laminate; HPL is rated to 275°F (135°C).
• Storage — Store sheets flat, face to face, in a climate-controlled space so they do not bow.
